The Khandha Paritta: Love for the Snake Kings
Love for the royal snake families and all creatures, taught by the Buddha after a monk died of a snake bite, with meanings
Virūpakkhehi me mettaṁ, mettaṁ erāpathehi me;
Chabyāputtehi me mettaṁ, mettaṁ kaṇhāgotamakehi ca.
Meaning
I have love for the Virūpakkhas, love for the Erāpathas, love for the Chabyāputtas, and love for the Kaṇhāgotamakas, the four royal snake families.
Apādakehi me mettaṁ, mettaṁ dvipādakehi me;
Catuppadehi me mettaṁ, mettaṁ bahuppadehi me.
Meaning
I have love for the footless, love for the two-footed, love for the four-footed, and love for the many-footed.
Mā maṁ apādako hiṁsi, mā maṁ hiṁsi dvipādako;
Mā maṁ catuppado hiṁsi, mā maṁ hiṁsi bahuppado.
Meaning
May the footless not harm me, nor the two-footed; may the four-footed not harm me, nor the many-footed.
Sabbe sattā sabbe pāṇā, sabbe bhūtā ca kevalā;
Sabbe bhadrāni passantu, mā kañci pāpamāgamā.
Meaning
May all beings, all living things, all creatures without exception, see only what is good. May no harm come to anyone.
Appamāṇo buddho, appamāṇo dhammo, appamāṇo saṅgho,
pamāṇavantāni sarīsapāni,
ahivicchikā satapadī, uṇṇanābhī sarabū mūsikā.
Meaning
The Buddha is immeasurable, the Dhamma is immeasurable, the Saṅgha is immeasurable. But creeping things are limited: snakes and scorpions, centipedes, spiders, lizards and rats.
Katā me rakkhā, katā me parittā, paṭikkamantu bhūtāni,
Sohaṁ namo bhagavato, namo sattannaṁ sammāsambuddhānaṁ.
Meaning
I have made my safeguard, I have made my protection: let the creatures draw back. I pay homage to the Blessed One, homage to the seven fully awakened Buddhas.
